All of the Year 6 pupils have the opportunity to participate in our ‘Hambleton Young Leaders’ initiative with the following aims:
- To learn more about themselves and others.
- To give all children opportunity to recognise leadership skills in themselves and other people.
- To develop new skills.
- To learn more about relationships with peer group/other children/adults.
- To encourage co-operation, teamwork, self-confidence, independence and communication
This as a unique opportunity, bespoke to Hambleton CE Primary School and is supported by the wider community.
Our bespoke ‘Hambleton Young Leaders award scheme’ is an initiative where the children can learn more about themselves and others whilst developing new skills. It encourages co-operation, teamwork, self-confidence, independence and communication and gives all the children an opportunity to recognise leadership skills in themselves and other people. Many of the children choose to support an initiative in school and the local or wider community.
Some of our Year Six pupils have written about working towards and gaining their awards.
We are inspired by all of the Values which make up our Christian Vision:
In particular:
We are compassionate
‘Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble’.
1 Peter 3:8
We are respectful
‘And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them’.
Luke’. 6:31
We are creative
‘Do not neglect the gift you have’.

Bronze Award
Rory…
I am very proud to achieve my Young Leaders Bronze Award. The new skill that I achieved was learning how to code. I coded a game in which the player picks a number and the computer tries to guess the chosen number. I am still doing a coding course on line with my Dad. I also learnt how to crochet a ‘Granny square‘ with my mum to make a pillow. My Mum is really quick and makes one in less than a minute! I really enjoyed planting the bulbs with my ‘Little Owls buddy’, Esmai. I also read a book to her and she kept pointing out all of the animal’s names.

To gain my ‘Bronze Young Leaders Award’, I went to church with my Nana and Grandad and placed leaflets into envelopes for the ‘Scarecrow festival’. I enjoyed spending the time with my grandparents and helping the community. I needed to fix my bike so I could take part in the ‘cycling proficiency activities at school. My Dad taught me how to pump up the tyres and check that it was safe for me to use and this is a new set of skills that I have learnt.
Maisie
I learnt how to make origami art work, which included a pen storage, a sling shot which I gave to my sister (regretted it later) and finally ten amazing claws!

My family keeps bees and enjoys the honey. In the summer each hive has about 50.00 bees and the queen bee has to eat a special food that the worker bees make called ‘Royal Jelly’. I created a presentation about the bees and shared it with the school. It can be seen below:
Silver Award
We made wooden crosses, decorated sticks, keyrings, knitted poppies and ornate wooden squares. To make the many of the craft items we used a ‘smouldering iron’. At the Royal British Legion gathering for Remembrance Sunday, we sold our created artwork and raised £180 for the ‘Poppy Appeal’. We enjoyed talking the serving soldiers, veterans and their families. This event has helped us show compassion towards others and is one of our school Christian values.

In November, as part of our Silver Award, Eagle Owls Class launched an appeal for donations to Selby Food Bank. Thank you to everyone who contributed!
